In reply to James Stanton. I would agree that very little thought had gone into the replacement programme. It is just a list of stuff already on the drawing board, or as pointed out already in existence. I bet there is not one iota of benefits comparison between the scrapped and the replacement programmes.

I would be intrigued to see the rationale and justification for many of these projects, given the amount of time, planning, and analysis (and updates to business cases!) that HS2 has been through.I would also be interested to see how any of these address the fact that the WCML is at capacity, and the need to move freight off roads.

Nottingham tram already runs to Clifton South, and Manchester Metrolink already runs to Manchester Airport. Both of these extensions opened around a decade ago, and this should give you some idea about how hastily this list was pulled together, and how serious it is.
