After the Billions already spent and continuing to be spent on Covid, the country is effectively broke. The budget should have recognized that the government can’t possibly justify spending over £100 BILLION more on HS2 and they should scrap it immediately. £100 BILLION will go some way towards rebuilding the fiscal position. The project was always a complete white elephant anyway and even more so post-covid since travel patterns will change dramatically and there will be few passengers willing to spend the sort of fares which will be needed to pay for the ridiculous thing. A new, thorough demand study should be carried out at once to establish what the real transport priorities are and it is certainly not the ability to travel at 400 kmph between a few cities in England. The east-west connection from Liverpool to Hull is far more important than a north-south ultra highspeed line. Why can’t the people in the DTp see that and tell the stupid government? Are they really that scared?
