The UK’s first plant to produce a bio-based raw material from sewage sludge is set to be installed by Royal HaskoningDHV at Blackburn Wastewater Treatment Works in Lancashire.

A new Bill has been passed through parliament which is set to herald the most significant increase in enforcement powers against water companies in a decade, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Water companies in England and Wales are calling on regulator Ofwat to reconsider its decision to cut £17bn of investment from plans for the next five years, otherwise “our environment and our economy will pay the price”.

Ofwat has opened enforcement cases againt four more water and wastewater companies due to how often they spill from storm overflows, meaning the regulator now has cases against all 11 water and wastewater companies operating in England and Wales.
